AVIF is small, and not every app opens it
AVIF is a modern photo format. Browsers handle it well. Some mail apps, older office tools and some photo printers do not. A JPEG is the file you can hand to almost anything.
Decoding uses the same family of codecs as the WebP tools, under the Apache licence. The picture stays in this browser. If a particular AVIF will not decode, the page says so rather than sending it anywhere.
Questions
Can I convert several AVIFs at once?
This page takes one file at a time, so a failure is easy to see.
Will the JPEG be as small as the AVIF?
Usually not. AVIF is often the smaller of the two. The page shows both sizes.
Is this the same as HEIC?
No. HEIC is the iPhone photo format. Use HEIC to JPG for those files.
