  2. Read words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and reading time.
  3. Nothing is stored. Clear the box when you are finished.

What each count means

Words are split on whitespace. Characters follow UTF-16 code units, which is what most form limits and word processors use for a character count. Characters without spaces count Unicode code points that are not whitespace, so an emoji counts as one there and may count as two in the full character total.

Sentences are split on full stops, exclamation marks and question marks. A final block of words with no closing mark still counts. Paragraphs are blocks separated by a blank line. Reading time uses 200 words a minute, a typical silent speed, and it is an estimate.

The text stays in the tab

There is no save button and no upload. Close the tab and the text is gone. If you are drafting something you need to keep, copy it back to your own document.

Questions

Do you store what I paste?

No. The count runs in this tab. The text is not uploaded.

Why can the two character counts disagree on an emoji?

The full character count uses UTF-16 code units. The count without spaces uses Unicode code points and then removes whitespace.

How is reading time calculated?

Words divided by 200, then shown in minutes. It is a guide to length, not a measure of how fast you read.
